Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Well, I don’t really do a lot for Halloween myself, but I know a lot of you do, and certainly Sae seems to get into the spirit of things! Indeed, our talented winner of the first SFC contest (which was a fan art contest) has drawn us a great picture for Halloween! Thanks, Sae! This is what she has to say about it:

“This would be Apis, Ragu, and Wendy trick-or-treating when they were younger (starting out at Wendy’s house, of course ;)). The costumes are supposed to be Max, Bleu, and Tao, but Shining outfits are pretty generic ^^;”

(24/08/04: The picture can now be found in the Shining Force CD fanart section)

Response from Sega Japan

Response from Sega Japan

Following the announcement from Sega of Japan, regarding the development of Shining Soul, I decided to write to them to see if I could get any further information about the game, so I could keep you all updated. I also wondered if I might be able to sign up to get some promotional items to use as prizes here and perhaps – entirely selflessly, of course 😉 – get a pre-release copy to review for SFC.
Today, I received a reply from Sega. Though it wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for or expected, it was a nice read, so I’ve scanned it in and posted both pages, you can read them here and here (about 140k each, lowish quality for the sake of filesize). I’ve blurred out my address of course!

It’s nice to know that despite their policy to not reply to international letters (this might well explain the lack of response to the Campaign: Phase II), they took the time to reply to me, and even sent back the Japanese stamps I’d sent them and paid for postage (express delivery, no less!) themselves. They also seem to like this site! So, it’s nice to be “semi approved” by Sega 😉 Well, at least they didn’t disprove of my use of their artwork etc here 🙂 The “that’s all for now….” at the end seemed semi-hopeful though – maybe they’ll think to send me information later on as it becomes available. Then again, maybe not, but we can hope, ne? Enough of my babbling, just have a look at the letter if you’re interested!

Regular Update

Regular Update

Again, I’ll keep this brief…
There’s a new MP3, new comic strip and a new poll for you, as always!
I’ve updated my Collection page, the Shining Force 3 Scenario 1 Artwork now includes the OST obi too. I’ve added a members birthdays section to the Forums (which are now 100% working again!), and finished translating chapter 2 of Final Conflict. Also, don’t forget you’ve got less than 2 weeks left to enter the contest!

Major CGI Problems

Major CGI Problems

The CGI “500” Errors seem to be worse today than yesterday. I’m stumped as to what’s causing them, but they’re now affecting every script on my site, so I wonder if my CGI access has been disabled or something… 🙁 I’ve contacted my host admins and have yet to hear back from them. Due to the script problems, this page is probably looking highly distorted right now, as the SSI commands are instead embedding the error page (which, unfortunately I’ve been unable to change despite my best efforts).
Please do not email me about the problems, unless it’s to tell me they’re gone! I’m aware that major things are going on here, but I’ve done all I can do, and now I think it’s down to my host to look into it. I’m really sorry for the inconvenince, please bear with me and just hold tight for now!

Sorry!

Update: m0by has set up a temporary forum for me here:
http://shf.hackitude.cjb.net/index.php
It’s not quite the same as the Ikonboard, but it’s a great temporary replacement. All the usual forum rules apply there, so if you’re not familiar with those I suggest you refrain from posting and wait until the normal forums are back up.

Message Board Woes!

Message Board Woes!

My apologies to all of the SFC message board users for the amount of errors that have been occuring during the last 12 hours or so. When the board reaches ~15,000 posts it tends to go screwy and from there it’s hard to cut down the number of posts because each time I try to delete something, I get another error. They should be back to normal shortly, I hope.
Another contributing factor is the demand on the scripts. We’ve seen the boards working fine with ~50 members on at once, but now imagine if each of those members was viewing say, 3 different boards at once, in different browser windows – that would be more like 150 requests on the board as opposed to 50, making the load/demand greater, and causing more errors.

So, would all board users please restrict themselves to viewing the boards in just one window at a time!

Sega’s Shining Future

Sega’s Shining Future

Well, this is certainly a busy time for SFC! There’s so much going on with Sega and the Shining series right now, I think I’d be best to stop sleeping for a few weeks just to that I can try to keep on top of everything! Anyway, on with the news!
An article posted at GameSpot yesterday (thanks to Chris who also emailed me about this one) desribes some of Sega’s plans for it’s future multiplatform titles. Perhaps the most interesting line is the following:

“The vintage software plan would focus on content created from revisiting established Sega franchises, Phantasy Star Online was held up as an example of how the approach would work out. Space Harrier, Nights, D, Enemy Zero, and the Shining Force series (Kayama noted the recently announced Shining Soul for GBA was a step in that direction).”

So, we were right! There’s more Shining games in the pipeline – Shining Soul is partially to “test the water” and will lead on to more Shining games. Woohoo! Can things possibly get any better?!

Other articles about Sega’s revelations at the Tokyo Games Show imply that they are really making use of the Game Boy Advance to GameCube linking system… perhaps we’ll see a way to link Shining Soul up to the next Shining Force title… which I’m sure will be on the GameCube… only time will tell!

Prepping SFC for Shining Soul

Prepping SFC for Shining Soul

It’s now just past 1AM, and I’ve finished adding the Shining Soul section here at SFC 🙂 Not a lot there yet, but I’ve organised all the links I’ve gathered so far.
Time for bed now, methinks.

Yet more Shining news!

Yet more Shining news!

Yet more great news on the Shining front!
Sega have signed a deal allowing them to release the Smash Pack on the Game Boy Advance – which may include the original Shining Force! Looks like Nintendo is the way for Shining fans to go 🙂

Although there’s not a lot more information about Shining Soul yet, here are a couple more articles.

I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for info… so far it seems Sega have only revealed a couple of screenshots of the game at TGS (the Tokyo Games Show)… but it’s looking good!

At least now we can be sure that this is no joke – it’s even on the Sega Japan website.

More Shining Soul News!

More Shining Soul News!

More information about Shining Soul has been made available! There are some screenshots at Famitsu.com, click here to see them, an article at IGN.com, the original article at the German GameFront Site, a bit at GameSpot and some discussions at the IGN.com boards here and here.
Looks like it’s going to be a busy time for me now trying to keep on top of all of this!

The game itself is going to follow the Shining storyline apparently, but be more in the style of Phantasy Star Online, allowing up to 4 people to adventure together and exchange items etc. There are said to be 4 character classes: warrior, archer, berserker and magician, and the screenshots look to me like a cross between PSO, Gauntlet Legends and Shining Wisdom. Sega are due to unveil more info and a video of the game at the Tokyo Game Show which takes place this weekend. Famitsu magazine is due to have an article in it’s 26th October issue.

The game doesn’t look as Shining Force-ish as it might, but it’s not finished yet of course, and if nothing else it’s a step in the right direction. Looks like maybe the next release will be on GameCube, as I predicted – woohoo!

The Campaign will continue – after all, we all know Sega’s track history when it comes to translating Shining games, ne? So, it’s still important we let them know the rest of the world wants to play Shining Soul!

If I find out more news, I’ll post it here ASAP!

Major News!

Major News!

Several reputable gaming sites have announced that Sega are releasing a new Shining game! It’s going to be on the GBA (Game Boy Advance), and is called “Shining Soul”. An Action RPG, it’ll presumably be in a similar style to Shining Wisdom. It’s reported to have a 4 player hookup option and is due for a Japanese launch in Spring 2002! That’s sooner than you think!

Regular Update

Regular Update

Hello all, and welcome to yet another fortnightly SFC update!
Today, for your pleasure and enjoyment, I am happy to present to you the Winner of the September Contest! The October Contest is now ready to accept your entries 🙂

As always there’s a new poll, comic strip and MP3 for you, and in addition to that I’ve also found the time to add over 100 sites to the SFC directory! There are now 335 sites listed, categorised and rated!

Of the sites I’ve added, I’d have to say these are the most noteworthy:
Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya – has such a cool main page!!
Shining in the Darkness Shrine – a superb Shining in the Darkness site
Shining Force CD Shrine – one of the most complete SHFCD sites I’ve seen so far!

Of course, there are plenty of other great sites added to, so have a good browse through the listings if you have the time.

I’ve moved all of September’s updates to the News Archive, so this page is a little less cluttered 🙂

I’ve got some additions to the Shining Chronology section, but I haven’t had the chance to add them yet. I added one piece of new Shining Force II Artwork, and will add more soon.

There’s not a lot else to report, except the Campaign is going as well as ever! The other sites haven’t received updates really over the last couple of weeks, as following the tragic loss of my aunt, things have been very busy around my home, and I haven’t felt much like updating. Thanks to everyone who sent messages of sympathy and condolence, my family appreciated all your kind words.

What else? Hmmm… oh, I have a couple of URLs to add to the “where to buy Shining Force” page, which I intend to add soon. I’ve also updated my Collection page, as it’s grown somewhat in the last month.

I still have some rare Shining Force Gaiden cards for sale, so email me if you want to discuss buying some.

Gaiden Cards on Ebay

Gaiden Cards on Ebay

Just thought you might be interested to know that I’ve managed to get my hands on a few unopened packets of Shining Force Gaiden cards – these are ultra rare, and I’ve put a couple of packs on Ebay, but also have a few others. If you want to buy any, let me know, or check out the auctions here and here.
