More info about the Shining Force Remake

As promised folks, here’s a bit of a rundown on what’s new in Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, compared with the original Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention (I still think the original name is cooler ;))
Here are the screenshots again, for those who can’t be arsed to scroll down!

Shining Force Remake: Exclusive Screenshot Slideshow!

The game itself remains true to the original in many ways, but takes some aspects a step further in a way reminiscant of the various changes we encountered in Shining Force III when comapred with Shining Force II. The basic storyline remains unchanged as far as I can tell, and the battles etc are in essence the same. There have been a few additions to the storyline, but nothing which conflicts with the original so far, and in fact much of the tranlsation is more true to the original Japanese release than the original English release was! However, unfortunately due to my life situation, I was unable to get my corrections through to Atlus in time, and as such some mistranslations or slightly odd renamings remain in-game, for example the Swords of Light and Darkness are now the Light and Dark Sabres, the Legacy of the Ancients is now the Legacy of the Gods, and we now have things like “DEF Potion” instead of Protect Milk. But these aren’t make-or-break issues IMHO. In addition to the overall storyline changes, we also have a lot of character development and history added, for example while in HQ, your Force-mates wander around telling you of their homes, families, past exploits and the like. It’s really quite lovely 🙂 There are more cutscenes in this game too, which add more depth and intreuge to the story, and for those who’ve not even played the original, this offers the chance to meet characters and see locations from much later in the game while prepping them for the events to come!

Obviously, the graphics and sound have been updated. I won’t say “improved”, because to be honest in some ways I think that’s not the case 😉 But, don’t get me wrong. This game is beautiful, in fact I’d like to refer to it as Sweetness Incarnate! I can tell you right now that this game is going to sell like hot cakes, and if this doesn’t revive the series, bringing in a new generation of fans (for whom I’m sure the majority of these changes have been implemented) – nothing will!

The sound has been spruced up a little, Shining Force CD style, though in some cases it has been altered a little, there won’t be many parts of the music that you don’t recognise if you’ve played the original. New sound effects have also been added, such as the squeak of our dear little Yogurt when first encountered at Gong’s hut, and the sound of centaur-hooves clopping on the ground as they wander around the battle map. Small though these additions are, they are very nice nonetheless!

I’m pleased to say that the updates to the graphics are for the most part very pleasing, as far as items, sprites, and tiles go – a little more colourful, perhaps, than the original, but they work very well on the GBA. The introduction sequence remains essentially unchanged, using the original graphics and text, though leading to a new and improved Simone to welcome us to the game. The only downside with the new graphics is likely to hit old-skoolers more so than the new recruits to Shining Fandom, being the character portraits. Though it’s nice to see some previously faceless characters given a portrait of their own, some of the old characters just didn’t need the facelift they got – as I’m sure you can see from the screenshots I’ve posted! However, none of them thus far have been terrible, just different and to be honest those I didn’t like are already growing on me, and some I even prefer to the originals (such as Max, Tao and Hans, amongst others). Some other graphical enhancements can be noticed throughout the game – new specially animated encounters with Yogurt, the screen panning to relevant locations when mentioned by a character (for example, when King Alterone mentions the Dragon’s Head, the screen pans to it) and the like.

But, those are just the superficial changes. There are a number of interesting and useful additions to the game too! For starters, items. Not only are there a lot more of them (with lovely icons, I might add!), but you can hold and equip more of them than previously. That’s right folks – at last, we have seperate item/weapon slots in this game, allowing a character to hold up to four items in addition to their equipped weapon and rings/accessories (note that you can now equip more than just the one ring!). Did you ever get sick of having to keep selecting to buy an item over and over? Well, no more of that now! In the remake, you can select a quantity of an item to purchase too – following which, your purchase will be put in the brand new “Item Box”, a rather nifty storage facility which adds to the ease of gameplay in as much as one can swap out items very quickly, even distribute equipment and the like mid-battle! No doubt it was also a slight annoyance to have to remember to equip an item after buying it – that problem has now been eliminated too! Many items now have extra special effects, such as being more effective against certain foes than others, or having the ability to prevent certain negative effects on a character. An entirely new type of item has also been added: Cards. These are more than just collectable pretties, they are used by the new character Mawlock, during battle. More on this as I progress with the game 😉

Battle-wise we also have some new features – most notably, the new side-story battles revolving around new force members, but I’ll not spoil too much of that 😉 One can now earn a bonus for completing the battle’s objectives, for example killing a boss, defeating it in X turns etc. The bonus is usually in the form of Gold or an interesting item. To add to the tactical side of the battles, a turn list is now available, meaning you can see who gets to move and when – this can in some ways make the battle easier, but it does allow for that extra element of planning, which I find great fun. Another change allows players to check the movement range of monsters in a battle, much like in Shining Force III, again most handy! But, beware – you won’t be able to check the stats of any monster you’re facing until you’ve killed at least one of them in the battle! If you encounter a chest in battle, don’t think you have to give up an entire move to get it, a character can now open the chest and still go on to make a move and attack as normal.

I must admit to having found the game quite easy so far, and I think the Shining Force II style experience is perhaps to blame. Experience now rolls over (ie, is not reset to 0 after a level up), meaning levels are gained far more quickly and character stats along with them. So far stat gains seems to be much like the original, varying from one measly point to your DEF, to 6+ on a number of stats. Growth charts for each character can be found on their stats screens, along with their kills, defeats and number of attacks, which is a nice addition. The battles do seem to be getting a bit more tough now, but I’m not allowed to talk specifically about anything beyond Chapter 2 at this point.

Overall, some wonderful improvements and additions, making this game at least as good as the original. Dare I say it might be better? Not until I’ve played more. But at the moment it’s shaping up to be some truly hot stuff!

I’ll post more when I can, I hope this little preview has been enough to whet your appetite at this stage 🙂

A plea to SFC visitors!

A plea to SFC visitors!

Since Lee’s going to be home in a few minutes, I’d best make this last bit brief for now…

As we’re about to buy a new home, finances at the moment are a little uncertain and I don’t have much to spare right now. Unfortunately it is also coming up to the time for my yearly hosting renewal (has it been so long already? Doesn’t time fly as you get older!) … meaning I’m about to get a bill for US$300, which I don’t have at the moment. So, here comes the yearly beg for a bit of help from those who appreciate the site (and its lack of blatant/annoying advertising/pop ups etc 😉 ) … if you can donate a dollar, or whatever you can spare, via PayPal, it will help to keep this site running for another year. I know updates have been few and far between these last few months, but that is just due to the problems in real life recently, and as you may be able to tell from the updates over the last few days, things are back on track again 🙂

So, please dig as deep as you are able, and maybe I’ll be able to stop begging soon 😉 *lol* Thanks folks!

Here’s the donate button again!

Lots of Shining Force Remake Screenshots!

Lots of Shining Force Remake Screenshots!

Well, with Lee now back at work and my “catching up with online life” beginning, I thought I’d best put up a slideshow of all the new Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon screenshots I’ve put up. Note that these are exclusive to SFC and are the best quality shots you’ll find on the web! Big thanks to Atlus for giving me a preview copy of the game and for allowing me to post these pictures! There will be more available soon, and (given that I’ve only got a few minutes now, and thus don’t have time) there will also be a list of new features/changes compared with the original. I shall try to post these on Monday, so keep your eyes peeled!

New Shining Force Remake Screenshots!

New Shining Force Remake Screenshots!

Hi all – just a quick update, not much time now as Lee is still off work post-op (recovering well and due back to work in a few days – expect a big update in the next week!). Finally got word from Atlus to say I can post more info/screenshots from the SF remake, so I’ve got a few together so far and put them up at the forums. More soon, meanwhile click here for the nice crisp pics!

Thanks for bearing with me during this difficult time. Should be back on track soon, though finally found a new house so will be moving in a couple of months – lots of ‘fun’ paperwork over the coming weeks >.<;;

More Scripts & a STHA Summary at last!!

More Scripts & a STHA Summary at last!!

Magnus Andersson… now there’s a name you’ve seen here a lot recently! “What wonders has he done for us this time?!” I hear you cry! Remember the Shining Wisdom UK script he provided last week? Well, he’s now played through the game again and typed up the villager dialogues too! They are now available in the relevant sections of the script. Great stuff as always, Magnus!

Today we also have another long-awaited addition to SFC – a storyline summary for Shining the Holy Ark. May in the past have offered to write one, but none have come through until now – so huge thanks go to Weaver Sparda for this excellent contribution!

I shall be sending some suggested script alterations to Atlus for the SF GBA remake shortly… but I can tell you one thing for certain – this game is going to sell like hot cakes! It’s mighty fine 🙂

And, finally, for those of you wondering how my man is doing in hospital – he is finally due for some surgery tomorrow. He’s last on the list and will apparently be in a lot of pain following the operation, but given a few days he should be doing much much better. Thanks again for bearing with me over this last month, it’s not been the easiest of months for either of us. When he gets home, I doubt I’ll have much time to update the site until he’s back at work… so this may be the last you hear from me for a few weeks, or even a few months. We just need to see how long he needs to recover from this ordeal.

More Script & Translations!

More Script & Translations!

Once again SFC and its visitors owe a big thanks to Magnus Andersson for his contributions… Magnus has excelled himself this time, not only providing the rest of Scenario 3 Section 6:1 & the majority of Section 6:4, but also having spent a few days typing out the complete script for Shining Wisdom’s UK version! He has chosen to omit the conversations with townspeople, but nonetheless this is a wonderful addition to the site. He also plans to complete the USA script, for which I’ll be lending him my USA Shining Wisdom disc. Great stuff!

As for my recent announcement about receiving a preview copy of Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, it seems I misunderstood Atlus’ intent with the preview – it was a favour to me to have a personal sneak-peek, and apparently I am the first media type to receive a copy. As such I’m not permitted to post any further screenshots, movies, sound clips etc at this time. But rest assured I have a good selection ready for when they give me the go-ahead. Huge thanks again to my friends at Atlus for being so kind as to let me take a look.

I can, however, tell you that I’m very pleased with the game so far – it’s really retained the feel of the original game, while adding extra features (which don’t detract from the game as a whole either). The music is basically true to the original, but slightly enhanced ala Shining Force CD, and the graphics really do look nice – though the updated portraits and new graphic style used in the attack scenes will take some getting used to, it comes out very well on the GBA’s screen. I think this one is going to sell like hot cakes – let’s make it top the charts, eh folks?!

And, for those of you who are wondering how my dearly beloved is doing, he’s finally been transferred to the other hospital this morning, for surgery in the next day or so. I’ve not seen him today (hence time to get these updates done!), but will be visiting him tomorrow – hopefully all patched up and ready for a few days observation before coming back home at last!

USA Release for SF GBA Remake!

USA Release for SF GBA Remake!

Reposted from January 17th, when the article had to be removed for reasons I can’t discuss 😉

I’ve been wanting to be able to tell you all this for almost a week now, but I had to keep quiet about it. Didn’t get a chance to update with this last night, due to all my real life stuff, so unfortunately no exclusive for SFC this time…

Our good friends at Atlus USA are localising the GBA Shining Force remake for a USA release, which is estimated to be in June of this year 🙂 I hope to be getting a preview copy from them shortly, and will post as much as I can about it should this happen 🙂 Wish me luck 😉 I must say, from the screenies on Atlus’ site, the game is looking sweeter than ever!

Since this article was first written, I have received a preview copy of the game, and hope to be including screenshots etc in the next day or so. I must say it’s looking fantastic! Pop along to the All Things Shining forum here at SFC for more info, as I’ll be trying to answer peoples’ questions about the game there, as I progress through it.

And for those of you who’ve been wondering how my man is doing – he now has a date for his transfer & surgery planned, at the start of next week. So, he should be home within 10-14 days if all goes well 🙂 Thanks for your support and understanding meanwhile. When he’s back at work (not sure when that will be), I’ll try to get a new contest etc up. For the time being, I hope you’ll understand when I say that’s something of a low priority for me!

More SFIII Scenario 3 translation sections coming in the next few days, courtesy once again of Magnus Andersson too – keep an eye out! Want to donate to help fund the translation? Scroll down…

More Sc3 Translation… donations welcome!

More Sc3 Translation… donations welcome!

Once again SFC sends a big thank you to Magnus Andersson, as he has once again kindly provided us with more translated sections of the Scenario 3 script! Today we have the rest of section 5:3, complete section 5:4, a missing part of 5:5 and the first part of 6:1. Great stuff as usual!
Magnus hasn’t wanted anything said about this publically until now, but he has been footing the bill for these translations himself – paying a Japanese friend to take the time to translate them to Swedish, and then he is spending his free time translating them to English. Some might expect the translations to be less accurate due to this, but I think you’ll agree they’re all very good – and it may surpsise you to know that Lineage went about his translations the same sort of way, a 2-language-step translation.

Magnus hopes to have the rest of the missing Scenario 3 sections finished by the end of February – and is very willing to have the unlisted sections translated too, such as villager dialogue, smaller sections, and missing parts of Scenario 2’s script… but, obviously he has already spent a lot of money on this, and is therefore wondering whether any SFC visitors might be willing to contribute a some money via PayPal towards future translations. He doesn’t have PayPal himself, but I am able to accept payments for him, which I will then arrange to transfer to his bank or send to him in some other way. Rest assured that this is not for profit on his part, but to cover the costs of more translation. I for one will be sending him some 🙂 The relevant button is below. If you choose to donate without using this button, please be sure to make a comment in the donation so that I know it’s for Magnus and not for SFC!

And, if anyone wants to donate to SFC itself while they’re at it, feel free to, the information you need is here 😉
Thanks again Magnus, great work!

Photos from Aspartate & Q’s Shining Booth

Photos from Aspartate & Q’s Shining Booth

With Lee still in hospital, and my time still fairly limited, I’ve not had a chance to find out exactly how the booth Aspartate and Q.GAME ran at their local convention – but having checked their site today, I see they’ve posted a number of photographs of the day. Looks to me as though the booth was a big hit! Plenty of people crowded around, playing games and looking through the exhibition of books etc. I even see the Yog plushie Asp won in an SFC Contest last year is on display 😀

Check out the photos here! (I’ve Babelfished the page, so the comments are in quasi-English ;))

On an unrelated note, no news yet on getting a preview of the SF Remake… but, it’s been a weekend so fair enough 😉 (I’ve lost track of the days somewhat, spending most of them at Lee’s side in hospital – today we should find out when he can have the surgery he needs).

BTW, I have a few amendments and links to add to some of the old translation sections, and will do these ASAP. Gotta start getting ready now for another hospital visit. The doctors should have some information for us today on exactly what surgery Lee will be having, and a rough idea of when 🙂 Hopefully he’ll be home within a few weeks 🙂

New SF: RotDD Screenies – clearer

New SF: RotDD Screenies – clearer

For those of you who were worried after seeing the colours in the screenshots posted at Gamekult, for the GBA SF remake … don’t be! Forum member Daria has found some new pictures from Jeux-France.com – you can see and discuss them here, or see more here. I have to say that seeing these has me even more excited about the release!! 🙂

I do have a little more news, but unfortunately at this time I’m not allowed to post it. Of course you can depend on me to do so as soon as I possibly can 🙂

I’m also in the process of trying to obtain a preview copy, and hope to get some crystal clear shots of the game at that time… and also be able to answer any questions you may have about it. Will keep you posted on my progress with obtaining one.

In non-Shining news, though relevant to this site, my boyfriend seems to be doing better but is likely to be in hospital for another week at least, as such I should be able to post updates either AM before I go to visit him or late PM when I get home. Thanks for all the well-wishes I’ve received over the past few days, we both very much appreciate them!

Work on my SSII site has pretty much ground to a halt on account of all these hospital visits, but will of course get the site ready in time for the release of the game! Thanks for bearing with me folks 🙂

Indeed, SF: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon!

Indeed, SF: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon!

My apologies for the somewhat late posting of this news, however I’ve spent 12 hours of today in hospital, at the side of my boyfriend who was rushed in this morning – it’s been rather hectic and the site has been the last thing on my mind.

Thought I’d best post the news now, however little it may be, since I don’t know when I’ll next be able to update (my boyfriend will probably require at least a week of rest at home from work).
Well, in better news it seems Gamespot was not wrong with its news the other day 🙂 They just got the wrong screenshots. So, there is indeed a remake of the original Shining Force in development for the GBA, which includes “enhanced” graphics (though looking at them, I’m not sure I’d call them that… I’m something of a purist when it comes to the original classic!) and a new card battle/collection system… as well as three new characters (not sure what to make of this either).

I’ve contacted THQ with regard to the game, and they are still telling me its “under wraps” and that nothing more can be said until it’s officially mentioned on their site. Hopefully when there’s something on the site, they may be able to give us a bit of inside info 🙂 They did mention they are aiming for an April 2004 release in Europe.

With the above in mind, I’m not sure what to think of the screenshots shown on Gamekult – some of them look less than authentic IMHO, but I suppose this is explained by the fact that the game is still in development. Here’s hoping much of the messy info onscreen is just for the development stage, and that they don’t change too much of the original story or play. Looks at least as though the main maps are essentially the same. I hope they don’t set the default Hero name to Coal 😉 Max was kickarse ;P

Right, I should probably try to get some sleep now. It’s been a long day!

Will post more when I can (and have more info of course!).

Many thanks to all who have contacted me about these screenshots. Far too many to credit here, I’m afraid, but you all know who you are! 😀
