Indeed, SF: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon!

Indeed, SF: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon!

My apologies for the somewhat late posting of this news, however I’ve spent 12 hours of today in hospital, at the side of my boyfriend who was rushed in this morning – it’s been rather hectic and the site has been the last thing on my mind.

Thought I’d best post the news now, however little it may be, since I don’t know when I’ll next be able to update (my boyfriend will probably require at least a week of rest at home from work).
Well, in better news it seems Gamespot was not wrong with its news the other day 🙂 They just got the wrong screenshots. So, there is indeed a remake of the original Shining Force in development for the GBA, which includes “enhanced” graphics (though looking at them, I’m not sure I’d call them that… I’m something of a purist when it comes to the original classic!) and a new card battle/collection system… as well as three new characters (not sure what to make of this either).

I’ve contacted THQ with regard to the game, and they are still telling me its “under wraps” and that nothing more can be said until it’s officially mentioned on their site. Hopefully when there’s something on the site, they may be able to give us a bit of inside info 🙂 They did mention they are aiming for an April 2004 release in Europe.

With the above in mind, I’m not sure what to think of the screenshots shown on Gamekult – some of them look less than authentic IMHO, but I suppose this is explained by the fact that the game is still in development. Here’s hoping much of the messy info onscreen is just for the development stage, and that they don’t change too much of the original story or play. Looks at least as though the main maps are essentially the same. I hope they don’t set the default Hero name to Coal 😉 Max was kickarse ;P

Right, I should probably try to get some sleep now. It’s been a long day!

Will post more when I can (and have more info of course!).

Many thanks to all who have contacted me about these screenshots. Far too many to credit here, I’m afraid, but you all know who you are! 😀

Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon?!

Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon?!

Time to start getting back into the swing of things after Christmas. Sorry I’ve not updated for a while, I’ve been hard at work on my Shining Soul II site!
Speaking of which, today Gamespot added an article which states the new Shining Force game for the GBA, rumoured some time ago to be in the pipeline from THQ, is to be called “Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon”, and released in Europe in April…

Excited? Don’t be just yet! The screenshots on the report are all from Shining Soul II, and the mention of a card collection system leads me to believe that THQ have simply renamed SSII for it’s Euro release, probably to avoid a sales flop like with the original Shining Soul 😉 I’m trying to get confirmation of this, but THQ’s UK site is currently down, so I can’t get their contact number. More news as I get it! Oddly chosen name though, since Dark Dragon isn’t even in Shining Soul II! So, perhaps there is something to this, afterall…

In other news… more Scenario 3 translation is on the way in the next few days, again courtesy of Magnus Andersson 🙂 Also, news of a Shining Booth at a convention in Taiwan… the booth is being run by our dear Aspartate (translator of much of the Japanese Shining Force III scripts) and Q.GAME (doujinshi artist, “Incomplete Finale” etc) and their site for the booth can be seen here. If you’re going to be in Taiwan on January 17th, I strongly recommend a visit to the convention – Asp and Q will have a large selection of Shining artwork and more in their exhibition, along with fan merchandise for purchase. Proceeds from the booth will be going towards travel expenses for me to go to the Shining Only convention in Japan with Asp and Q in a couple of months. We’ll also be selling some fan merchandise here at SFC to raise funds too.

Shining Force Booth at Taiwanese Convention!

We hope to provide coverage of both conventions here at SFC, and if we raise the money for me to go to Shining Only, you can be sure I’ll pick up some cool Shining treats from Japan for contest prizes here 🙂

More updates soon!

Atlus announces Shining Soul II Release Date!

Atlus announces Shining Soul II Release Date!

Indeed, folks, Atlus USA have just made an announcement about Shining Soul II’s US release – not news to me, though it does confirm the deadline I’ll be working to for getting my guide ready and online 😉 – it should be in stores in Feburary 2004, though as with the original, don’t be surprised if it does get a little delayed at the last minute. March wouldn’t be an unrealistic estimate at this time.

More info on Atlus’ Shining Soul II info page, here, including some screenshots I don’t doubt the major gaming sites will post as the ‘first shots’, despite SFC having posted preview shots 3 whole weeks ago 😉

Guess I should get a move on with my guide for this awesome game then 😀

Shining Tears?

Shining Tears?

A bit late updating on this one, as I’ve not been online much this week 😉 Anyhow…

Gamefront recently reported that Sega has trademarked the name “Shining Tears”, for a possible videogame product. It should be noted that in the past, companies have trademarked names and nothing has come of it, but with the knowledge that a game has been in development, and that the Shining Force trademark itself has recently been renewed (along with the news that THQ are to release a Shining Force game for the GBA in Europe/Australia – it is unknown at this time whether this is a new game or a port of the original), it seems possible this name could well be in preparation for the next installment of the Shining series!

Thanks to the various folks who emailed me with this news!

EXCLUSIVE! Shining Soul II English Screenshots!

EXCLUSIVE! Shining Soul II English Screenshots!

Well, I’d hoped to get a lot more online today (including the contest results & a new contest – will do ASAP, sorry for the delay!), but once again things have ended up busier than expected. If I can get anything else up here next week (despite my other half being home ;)), I shall of course do so!
I received my preview copy of Shining Soul II from Atlus a few days ago, and in fact on the day I got it, I couldn’t tear myself away from it! As you probably know, I thoroughly enjoyed the game in Japanese, but now I’m playing it in English I’m enjoying it all the more!

The game seems to be fully translated now, with only some minor bugs left to be worked out. Although some of the names have been altered in the translation (for example, Princess Cocotte is now Princess Camille, the warrior Alex is now Eric), there don’t seem to be any glaring problems with this. At the moment it’s seeming a little easier than the Japanese release, but this could just be because I’m getting good at the game from playing it so much. I’m only a few areas into this copy so far, so I can’t judge the difficulty too well at this point.

Being a preview, unfinished copy of the game, there are all sorts of neat extras which of course won’t be in the final version – little guys who ask me if I want to change what the shops sell, or open up all the areas etc 😉 Obviously features for testing. I expect this is quite a common thing, but it rather tickled me to find this stuff. You’ll see the “badgermen” (as I call them – it’s actually the Card Master sprite) who ask these questions in in one of the shots below, though not actually being spoken to in it.

I’m typing up all the details etc as I play through this version (despite being able to get to any point in the game almost immediately, I want to play it properly), in order to make a new site all about it 🙂

Atlus have given me permission to post as much as I’d like in preview information, so expect more in the coming weeks 🙂 Looks like they’ve done a really good job on this game, as with the original. Quite exciting to have this as an exclusive, too – I don’t think any other sites have anything about it – yet 😉 Wonder who else’ll pick up these screenshots for use? *lol*

Well, I’ll not bore you with more blathering at the moment – I’ll leave you with the translated intro text (I’m sure it’s okay for me to post that much – don’t expect the whole script until long after the release though!) and a half dozen screenshots to drool over 😉

The Dark Dragon was defeated and Light returned to the land.
The four heroes were hailed for banishing the Darkness.
The people were thankful that peace had returned, and the legend of the Hero of Light was passed down.
But as time passed and people’s lives improved, the legend was forgotten.
So, too, did their gratitude fade, and people began to take Light for granted.
In a peace filled town, an old man stood preaching a seditious prophecy…
“Brothers and sisters, look! The crystal is cloudy!
According to legend, Darkness was defeated!
But, Light will grow out of control, eventually giving rise to Darkness once again.
The clouding of the crystal foretells this future.
The balance of the world will soon collapse!”
The old prophet continued to speak to the passerby, and his voice rang through the town square.
But, those who had forgotten about the legend took no heed of the prophet’s words.
Sadly, at that very moment, the end of peace and prosperity was near.
As the prophet had warned, the balance between Darkness and Light had been lost.
Light had become too strong, and Darkness stirred again.
An alchemist, a servant of Darkness, appeared…
His name was Gillespie.
Gillespie lured the old prophet to the outskirts of town, shattered the cyrstal that told of the Darkness, and robbed the world of one virtuous old man.
As a member of a Dark order known as the Chaos Knights, Gillespie had another mission to complete…
And so, he traveled to Klantol Castle…
He cunningly befriended the knight Deatharte, whom King Marcel trusted above all others, and he gave to Deatharte the “Forbidden Fruit.” With that acomplished, Gillespie left those lands.
Deatharte was suspicious of Gillespie and so he did not eat the fruit, until one day… when his curiousity got the better of him… …and he tasted the “Forbidden Fruit”…

I’ll put up more as soon as I can 🙂 Hope the above is enough for now!

Remember, no release date has as yet been confirmed. All I can say at this point is that the date which was previously mentioned on Atlus’ website by mistake (December this year) was not correct. Rest assured that as soon as I can say more, I will! I’ll make a full review of the game available nearer the time of release.

Once again, huge thanks to Atlus for all their help and support! You guys are the best 🙂

Shining Soul II to see US release!

Shining Soul II to see US release!

I’ve been waiting for some time to be able to announce this 😉 Atlus, who recently released Shining Soul in the USA (which seems to be selling quite well Stateside!) have been working on Shining Soul II for a US release. No release date has been specified at this time, however the date accidentally posted on their website some time ago (which I know at least a few of you saw) is not correct. I should be receiving a preview copy of the game in the next week, and Atlus have given me permission to post as much as I want to as a preview! So, I’ll try my best to get some good stuff together for you all! Once again, huge thanks to Atlus for being so very helpful! I’ve recently had time to complete the Japanese release of Shining Soul II, so I very much look forward to playing it in English! I’m really loving the game (playing Advanced mode at the moment), and intend to make a guide to it in the near future!

In SFC news, the Forums are currently down, and will be for some time, due to a problematic night involving renegade moderators and more. I’m not looking forward to dealing with that 🙁 If I’m back from my day out early enough today, I’ll try to get the regular SFC update done, as I’m pretty sure we’re due for a new contest etc about now 😉

Shining Soul USA Release delayed!

Shining Soul USA Release delayed!

It seems Atlus were a little ahead of themselves, announcing that the game has been shipped out to retailers! The game will, it seems, not be going out until September 23rd – a delay of one week. Meanwhile, Atlus have put up their official Shining Soul site which, though pretty, is fairly limited in it’s content. Hopefully they plan on adding to it 🙂

Europe & Australia GBA Shining Releases

Europe & Australia GBA Shining Releases

Once again, the news breaks while I’m not online! *lol* But nonetheless, it’s wonderful to hear, and I’d first up like to thank KiwiDomingoBleu for being the first (of many ;)) to email me about this!

Major gaming sites have reported that THQ have entered into a deal with Sega Europe to publish several titles on the GBA, which include Shining Force and Shining Soul II. I gotta say, I for one am very excited about this! Two new Shining titles on one platform – way to go, Sega! When I first read about this, I assumed it was to be a remake of the original Shining Force, but on reading IGN’s article, it seems it will indeed be a new game (or at least a total remake of the original) which is in development (by an unknown company) and that more may be revealed at the Tokyo Games Show (which starts on September 26th).

Whether both of these titles will make it to the US is as yet unknown… makes me wish I could make some further comments, but at this time, I can’t 😉 Hopefully in a few days I’ll be allowed to say something *lol*

Time to go and drop Sega Japan, Sega Europe & THQ a line, methinks!

Shining Soul USA release date!

Shining Soul USA release date!

Atlus USA have announced the release date for Shining Soul in the USA – September 16th (this year, of course!). <edited, not at liberty to discuss why, sorry!>

Great stuff Atlus!

More on the US release of Shining Soul, next week when I should receive my review copy 🙂

Shining Soul USA Release News

Shining Soul USA Release News

My contacts at Atlus USA have confirmed that they have completed the localisation of Shining Soul for the US market and the game is now being manufactured, having received approval from Nintendo of America. It should be hitting the shelves around mid-September, although an exact release date is yet to be confirmed.

My review copy will be on the way tomorrow, so keep an eye on SFC in about a week for a pre-release review of the game! If any of the folks at Atlus are reading, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and for being willing to hear me out 😉

Shining Soul II Released & More News

Shining Soul II Released & More News

Today sees the release of Shining Soul II in Japan, and with a bit of luck my copy of the game will be arriving in the next week for me to review. Sadly, Sega did not respond to my requests for further info or a review copy of the game, so it’ll be a post-release review. Sega Japan have also updated their Shining Soul II minisite today to include a Multiplayer Comic and new cool Desktop/icon downloads on their ‘Special’ page.

There’s also a rather interesting page (which I hope to have translated, though I’m not sure I’m able to do it) or two with information from Shining Soul II’s creator, including what seems to be a bit of a history of the Shining series and some rather cool pictures (I wonder if they had all of those to hand, or if they took some from my scans at SFC? *lol*). If anyone’s able to translate the info, I’d love to post it here.

They have also added a form to their website, allowing owners of Shining Soul II to enter the contest via this, instead of sending in the registration card from the game. However, only entrants within Japan will have the chance of winning the prize! Looks like I’ll have to ask Rei to enter for me 😉
